Using Masks on iOS

Masks are a tool that lets you isolate specific areas of your image, so you can edit or guide the AI in a more focused way. Once a mask is created, you can decide how to use it, either for a quick suggestion or for a more permanent change.

On iOS, there are two ways to use masks:

  1. As a temporary guide, where your brush edits are used to guide the AI’s output, but don’t stay on the canvas.
  2. As a committed edit, where you apply the mask and keep the changes as part of your image input.

You can draw, erase, or modify the mask using different tools and modes, giving you full control before deciding how to proceed.

Mask Types

You can switch between two mask modes:

  • Freehand: Draw a closed shape directly on the canvas with your finger or stylus. Ideal for quick selections with loose or geometric outlines.
  • Paint: Brush over an area to define the mask with more fluid strokes. You can adjust the brush size for better control. This is helpful when selecting soft edges or organic shapes.

Mask Tools

Once a mask is drawn (with any method), you can refine or apply it using the toolbar options:

  • Add (+): Keep expanding the current mask
  • Subtract (–): Remove parts of the current mask
  • Invert: Flip the selection to mask everything except the current area
  • Apply: Commit the mask so edits inside it influence your next generation
  • Reset: Clear the mask and start again
